Hospital Says California Farmworker Survived Fall From 30 Feet During ICE Arrest Attempt.
California Farmworker in Critical Condition After 30-Foot Fall During ICE Raid, Hospital Confirms
A California farmworker is in critical condition following a 30-foot fall during a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid, according to Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC). The hospital confirmed Friday evening that the worker, identified as Jaime Alanis Garcia, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
"The family of Mr. Jaime Alanis Garcia has authorized the Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) to release the following information. Mr. Garcia is currently hospitalized at VCMC and remains in critical condition," the hospital said in a public statement.
The incident occurred Thursday during a large-scale ICE operation at an agricultural site on Laguna Road in the Camarillo area of Ventura County. The United Farm Workers (UFW) union reported that several individuals, including farmworkers, were injured during the immigration enforcement action.
In a series of posts, the UFW said, “Some farmworkers sustained critical injuries,” and added that “others, including U.S. citizens, remain unaccounted for.”
According to ABC News affiliate KABC, Garcia may have been attempting to flee federal agents when he fell approximately 30 feet from the roof of a greenhouse. A family member told the station that Garcia suffered serious injuries, including a fractured neck and skull.
However, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson offered a different account, stating that Garcia was not being chased by law enforcement at the time of the incident.
“This man was not and has not been in CBP or ICE custody,” said Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at DHS. “Although he was not being pursued by law enforcement, he climbed onto the roof of a greenhouse and fell 30 feet. CBP agents immediately called a medivac to provide emergency medical care.”
The ICE raid in Ventura County was one of at least two large-scale immigration enforcement actions that took place in Southern California on Thursday, sparking protests and concerns from community members and labor advocates.
