Apple Plans 3-Year iPhone Revamp: Air, Foldable, and Curved-Glass Models Coming 2025-2027. Technology news.

According to a Bloomberg News report on Sunday, Aug. 24, Apple is planning a three-year overhaul of its flagship iPhone lineup. This initiative comes as other tech companies increasingly focus on artificial intelligence (AI)-driven smartphones.

2025: Introducing the iPhone Air

Next month, Apple is set to launch the iPhone Air, a slim new model designed to replace the iPhone 16 Plus. The device is expected to be ultra-thin and may feature a SIM-free design, signaling a move toward eSIM technology. While 2025 may not be a revolutionary year for the iPhone, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman notes that it sets the stage for major innovations in 2026 and 2027.

2026: Apple’s First Foldable iPhone

In 2026, Apple plans to release its first foldable iPhone, expected to feature five cameras and, like the iPhone Air, no SIM card slot. This model marks a significant step in design innovation, positioning Apple to compete in the emerging foldable smartphone market.

2027: Celebrating 20 Years with the iPhone 20

Apple will celebrate the iPhone’s 20th anniversary in 2027 with a curved-glass iPhone 20. This design will depart from the squared-off style used over the past five years, offering all-around curved glass edges for a refreshed look.

The AI Challenge for Apple

While Apple focuses on hardware innovations, it faces challenges in the AI smartphone race. The Wall Street Journal’s tech columnist Nicole Nguyen points out that Google’s Pixel 10 is already leading with AI-powered features, such as:

  • Real-time voice translation and transcription

  • Smart photo editing

  • Contextual AI suggestions

Meanwhile, PYMNTS CEO Karen Webster warns that Apple risks turning the iPhone into a commodity product if it cannot keep up with AI advancements. Pixel devices now allow users to speak, search, transact, and navigate entirely through integrated AI—a native experience Apple currently lacks.

Apple has also faced AI-related setbacks, including delayed Siri updates, talent departures, and investor impatience. However, the company is reportedly preparing a Siri redesign powered by large language models, which could debut on iPhones and iPads as early as next year.
