Oldest-Known Ankylosaur Fossil Discovered in Morocco: A Spiky Dinosaur That Rewrites History.

A groundbreaking discovery has taken the paleontology world by storm: the oldest-known ankylosaur fossil, named Spicomellus afer, has been found in the Jurassic floodplains of Morocco. This unusual dinosaur lived approximately 165 million years ago and featured a remarkable array of spikes and bony armor along its neck, ribs, and tail.

Spicomellus afer was a plant-eating dinosaur measuring roughly four meters long and weighing around two tonnes. Its extraordinary spikes and primitive tail club suggest these defensive and display features appeared 30 million years earlier than scientists previously believed. The fossil discovery pushes back our understanding of ankylosaur evolution significantly.

Scientists described Spicomellus as “absolutely bristling with spikes,” reconstructing its anatomy from fragmented remains to reveal a dinosaur unlike any other previously known.
