Henry S. Bienen Named Interim President of Northwestern University .us news .

Northwestern University has officially announced that Henry S. Bienen, the university’s former president, has been appointed as the interim president, effective September 16, 2025. This leadership change follows the resignation of President Michael Schill, who stepped down earlier this month.

Bienen, who served as the 15th president of Northwestern University from 1995 to 2009, is widely respected for his transformative leadership. During his tenure, the university experienced exceptional growth in academic excellence, research innovation, financial strength, and athletic achievements. Northwestern’s endowment multiplied, student applications reached record highs, and the university’s global reputation significantly improved under his guidance.

The Board of Trustees expressed full confidence in Bienen’s ability to guide Northwestern during this transitional period. Chairman Peter Barris emphasized that Bienen’s deep institutional knowledge and proven leadership make him uniquely qualified to take on this role once again.

As interim president, Henry S. Bienen will oversee the university’s strategic initiatives, day-to-day operations, and continue Northwestern’s mission of advancing research, education, and student success until a permanent president is selected.

This appointment not only marks a moment of continuity for Northwestern University but also highlights Bienen’s lasting impact on higher education leadership.
