Cameroon's Paul Biya Wins Eighth Term Amid Protests and Claims of Fraud

Cameroon's President Paul Biya, at 92 years old, has secured an eighth term in office, extending his 43-year rule. The Constitutional Council announced on October 27 that Biya won 53.66% of the vote in the October 12 presidential election, defeating opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who received 35.19% Reuters.

Biya, the world's oldest serving head of state, has faced increasing criticism for his prolonged tenure and the country's political climate. His campaign was largely conducted online, with minimal public appearances, raising questions about his health and leadership. Despite these concerns, Biya's government maintains a strong grip on power, with loyal security forces and state institutions.

The election results have sparked widespread protests, particularly in the commercial capital, Douala, where opposition supporters clashed with security forces. Reports indicate that at least four people were killed in the unrest, and opposition leaders have accused the government of electoral fraud Reuters.

As Biya prepares for another term, the political landscape in Cameroon remains tense, with ongoing debates about democracy, governance, and the future of the nation's leadership.
