Trump Proposes Swapping Ukrainian Land with Russia — Zelenskyy Vows: ‘We Will Not Gift Our Land.

Kyiv, Ukraine — August 9, 2025 — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly rejected the idea of ceding Ukrainian territory to Russia after former U.S. President Donald Trump suggested a potential “swapping of territories” as part of a peace deal to end the ongoing war.

In a video address released on August 9, Zelenskyy stated, “Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier.” His remarks came just days before Trump is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 to discuss possible resolutions to the three-year-long conflict.

Trump’s Controversial Proposal

Speaking at a White House event on August 8, Trump proposed that both Ukraine and Russia might have to give up certain territories to achieve a peace agreement.

“You are looking at territory that has been fought over for 3.5 years,” Trump said. “We’re looking at swapping. We’re going to get some back. We’re going to get some switched. There’ll be some swapping of territories,” he added, referring to Ukrainian regions currently occupied by Russian forces.

The suggestion quickly sparked criticism from Kyiv, with Zelenskyy stressing that any such decision made without Ukraine’s involvement would be illegitimate.

Zelenskyy’s Firm Stance

In multiple social media posts on August 9, Zelenskyy reiterated that “the war can’t be ended without us, without Ukraine” and warned that any decisions made without Ukraine are “decisions against peace.”

“They will not achieve anything,” Zelenskyy said. “These are stillborn decisions. They are unworkable decisions.”

European Leaders Back Ukraine

European leaders swiftly issued a joint statement on August 9, ahead of the Trump-Putin meeting, reaffirming their commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine,” read the statement signed by leaders of France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Finland, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. “We remain committed to the principle that international borders must not be changed by force.”

Geopolitical Tensions Rise Ahead of Alaska Summit

The planned meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska has intensified global debate over how to end the war. While some analysts argue that territorial compromise could be a step toward peace, others warn that it would set a dangerous precedent by rewarding aggression.

Ukraine has maintained a consistent position: no peace deal will be accepted if it involves giving up land seized by Russia. The war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, has resulted in thousands of deaths, millions displaced, and extensive damage to Ukraine’s infrastructure.

With the Alaska summit days away, international attention is fixed on whether diplomatic negotiations will make progress — or further deepen the divide between Ukraine and its allies on one side and Russia on the other.
