Zelenskyy Rejects Trump’s “Territory Swap” Plan with Russia Ahead of Alaska Peace Talks

Zelenskyy Rejects Trump’s “Territory Swap” Plan with Russia Ahead of Alaska Peace Talks.

Trump’s “Swapping Territories” Suggestion

Trump, set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, said during a White House event on August 8 that both sides might need to give up land to reach a peace agreement.

“You are looking at territory that has been fought over for 3.5 years,” Trump said. “We’re looking at swapping. We’re going to get some back, we’re going to get some switched. There’ll be some swapping of territories.”

Zelenskyy: No Peace Without Ukraine’s Voice

Zelenskyy responded strongly, insisting that any deal struck without Ukraine’s participation would be invalid.

“The war can’t be ended without us, without Ukraine,” he said in social media posts. “Any decisions made without Ukraine are stillborn decisions. They are unworkable decisions.”

European Allies Back Ukraine

On August 9, leaders from France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Finland, the United Kingdom, and the European Union issued a joint statement supporting Ukraine ahead of the Trump-Putin talks.

“The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine,” the statement read. “We remain committed to the principle that international borders must not be changed by force.”

With both Washington and Moscow preparing for the Alaska summit, international attention is focused on whether these talks will produce a breakthrough — or further widen divisions over the future of Ukraine’s borders.
